LATERAL TRANSFERS
If you're a P.O.S.T. (Police Officer Standard of Training) certified police officer currently residing in another state or parish, you're pre-qualified to become a member of the best-trained, best-equipped and most highly-paid police officers in Louisiana through a lateral transfer.
In order to be officially considered for a lateral transfer, police officers from another state must have completed at least 320 hours of training; be in a full-time, active patrol position for one year; and have a current/valid P.O.S.T. training certificate or the equivalent.
The application process for lateral transfers is an abridged version of the new recruit process. Below is a list of items you will need to complete and bring to City Hall in order to become a member of the NOPD:
1) Completed Printout of the Application for Examination
2) Completed Personal History Record
3) Current Driver's License
4) Original High School Diploma, or a State-Approved G.E.D., or your Official High School Transcript
Please note: Copies will not be accepted.
5) Certified Copy of Your Birth Certificate, Naturalization Papers, or Baptismal Papers
6) Documentation Proving Your Previous Employment in the Law Enforcement
In Louisiana, this document is called P.O.S.T.; however, each state has its own version of this document. Please bring your P.O.S.T. document or its equivalent with you.

LATERAL TRANSFER TESTING
Once you have submitted the above materials to City Hall, you must schedule a time to come to New Orleans for testing and possible training.
The test for a police officer looking to make a lateral transfer into the New Orleans Police Department consists of both written and multiple choice questions. In addition, out-of-state applicants must complete a B-Pad test that measures an officer's law enforcement knowledge.
Once the B-Pad test is complete, you'll be sent to Police Headquarters for a background investigation interview in which you will be photographed, fingerprinted, and given the C.V.S.A. (Computerized Voice Stress Analysis) exam. This exam also involves a urinalysis test as well as a physical examination.
Failure to complete any phase of this testing process will result in an automatic "Unacceptable" classification.
Finally, if the New Orleans Police Department concludes that any of your training does not comply with their high standards, or you are below the minimal hours of training required for all lateral transfers, you will be placed in an abbreviated academy class (4 to 6 weeks to complete depending on your previous training).
Please note: Currently Louisiana does not verify P.O.S.T. certification of Out-of-State Training until you've been hired. Therefore, the NOPD will hire you as a recruit until the State of Louisiana P.O.S.T. Council verifies and accepts your out-of-state training.
